In addition to the spectacular remains of Roman gold mining, Las Médulas makes it possible to understand on the ground the interaction between human communities and natural resources they exploited as well as the social relationships developed by this exploitation.
The remains of Roman mining, the canals, the mining cavities, the accumulation of wastes – make Las Médulas an extraordinary example of ancient technology. This richness, linked with the singularity of some its environmental resources – its geomorphology, woods, wetlands - make this a zone of special interest. To understand this landscape correctly though it is necessary to understand it within the complex historical process of which it forms a part.
