The Las Médulas Foundation and the Research Group “Social Structure and Territory-Landscape Archaeology”, from the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), developed the 1st Phase of the Spatial Data Infrastructure of the Archaeological Zone of Las Médulas (IDEZAM). This innovative project enhances the valorisation, management, dissemination and research of Las Médulas, mainly because it’s based in the researches that the CSIC carried out in the last decades on this cultural landscape. Moreover, IDEZAM is a new tool for scientific knowledge transfer, considering that this kind of knowledge means social benefit in the sense that it’s a basic foundation to plan sustainable development politics.
In the Geoportal it’s also possible to freely access the IDEZAM’s book (in Spanish only), recently edited, which presents this project as a practical example of a theoretical and methodological proposal to apply a new paradigm of the Geomatics, the Spatial Data Infrastructures (SDIs) to the historical and archaeological heritage.
In addition, a map viewer is also available, based on the Web Map Service of the Las Médulas’ SDI, which has strictly followed the criteria of the European Directive INSPIRE and also the recommendations of the Spanish SDI Working Group (GT IDEE) to develop SDIs in Europe and in Spain, respectively. The map viewer has been created to improve a direct, dynamic and easy access to the scientific information of the cultural landscape of Las Médulas.
